A loud refrigerator is the worst. If the refrigerator in your home seems to be a bit louder than it usually is there are a few simple things that you can check while attempting to find the cause. There are a lot of fans on a home refrigerator that might create strange noises. The appliance could also not be balanced too. Or you might have a compressor wearing down. If your refrigerator is much louder when the ice maker is working, the sounds might be a broken a water valve.

There are some basic components that need to be checked. Like is your refrigerator filled too full? A refrigerator that’s too can result in glass bottles and other foods and liquids to clink and clank together. This will create a lot of annoying sounds inside the refrigerator that isn’t ideal because the refrigerator is running and thereby producing a minor vibration.

If you own a model of refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but do not have the water line connected, be sure you turned off the dispenser and ice maker. There is almost always a button on the water dispenser on the refrigerator that can be used to shut off the water dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you need to pull up the metal bar inside of it. If the refrigerator is installed near a wall in the kitchen, it could cause the standard operating sound to seem a lot louder than it is. This is due to the echoing of the sound of the appliance. Slide it out away from the kitchen wall and see if that helps at all or not. A refrigerator needs to be close to 2 inches away from the rear wall of the kitchen to limit the sound.

If it isn’t one of these simple and common fixes, it is time to dive on in. Most of the time, the refrigerator fans are the reason for a loud refrigerator. There are fan blades that sometimes get dirty and clogged. There are times the fan motors do as well. There is a condenser fan and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Sometimes the refrigerator condenser fan will get a coating of dust or fuzz on it and then needs to be cleaned often. If it builds up and gets too heavy it might wear out the bearings inside the refrigerator fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

behind the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will need to have a wrench or screwdriver to remove the back panel from the refrigerator. As soon as it’s off you’ll see a fan in there. If it’s covered in dirt and dust, take a rag and gently wipe it off. While you’re in there you should check the coils as well. The coils are typically near there and full of the same grime and dust that the fan is. Cleaning the coils will only take a couple of minutes but it will certainly help the refrigerator run efficiently. This is actually a very common issue that can cause a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades in the refrigerator. Do the blades spin easily? If they do not it means the fan motor bearings are broken. This is an easy fix, as the fan assembly is usually a component that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before you do this, be sure the refrigerator is unplugged. Do the same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is located behind the freezer unit. This is not usually the problem, as this particular fan is protected inside the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the sounds are coming from the top of the appliance that’s the area to check.

If you think it could be the refrigerator compressor, the large, usually gray or black object under the refrigerator by the coils, we suggest calling Albany Appliance Repair. That’s not a repair a homeowner should proceed with.
